Mac World New York a year ago.

Before the beginning of MWNY 2002, we have decided to make a summary of MWNY 2001.The Cube-Zone was there last year. Walking in New York, one could see Apple ads everywhere. Small I love NY (mmm I Apple NY....), big ones and even giant iBook ads.

The second day (18th of July), the keynote took place and the Expo was opened to the Public. Everybody could see the new products that were supposed to ship (PowerMac G4 and iMacs). Once again Steve Jobs surprised us with several new products....Well.... in fact he did not.... everybody had seen the new towers on the Web, including on the Cube-Zone.

Steve Jobs also introduced three new iMacs. As expected, the new iMacs did not have a TFT screen. The three iMacs came in 3 colors : indigo, graphite and the ugly snow. Flower power and blue dalmatien disappeared The expo was a little bit disappointing, or maybe the rumors were too exciting.

Steve Jobs also made a presentation of Mac OS X 10.1 which was supposed to be dramatically faster than the current 10.0.4 version.

What is going to happen this year? Only two days to go, and you'll know... Let's hope the expo won't be as disappointing than last year!

MWNY : no hype from Apple (yet). Is it good news or bad news?

If you remember well, before the launch of every major product (the iPod, the iMac TFT...), dunring the last past months, Apple made a lot of hype. We saw "Beyond the Rumor Sites. Way Beyond."on the Apple web site before the launch of the iMac and Steve Jobs sais that Apple would release a "breakthrough digital device... and it is not a Mac". This time we don't have anything. Is it good news or bad news?

I truly believe that we will see very good upgrades of the current product lines (iPod or iMac TFT), but nothing really "way beyond the rumor sites". It probably also means that the PowerMacs will be launched later (in august as we said before), or that they are not that fast. Why would Apple make a big deal out of a new PowerMacs annoucement? Because they would be really faster than wintel boxes. That will probably be the case next january. But will it be this summer? I don't think so. Yes they will be fast, but I will keep my Cube and add a 1Ghz upgrade :-)

The current PowerMac line has been EOL'd.

One of our sources told us yesterday that the current PowerMac line (800 Mhz, 933 Mhz and dual 1 Ghz) has been EOled. Computers dealers cannot order those computers from Apple anymore. The current promotion indicates that Apple has a huge stock of those PowerMacs.

We'll definitely see some new PowerMacs with new enclosures and new motherboards at this summer, either at MWNY, or later, for Apple Expo Paris, or even during a special event in August. By the way did you notice that the Seybold and Apple Expo Paris are scheduled the same week: the Seybold begins on september 9th and Apple Expo paris, on September 10th.

Our source also told us that a17" iMac TFT may be available soon. We doubt it, but we could be wrong. Stay tuned.

Update : Several Apple resellers in Europe confirmed that they were not able to order PowerMacs from Apple anymore. This is also confirmed by the French website MacBidouille.

Misha, from MacMinute does not agree with the article we published : "Hi, Just wanted to let you know that I suggest you double-check your sources -- the current PMG4 line has *not* been EOL'd. Cheers, Misha "

Well we don't know if the PowerMacs can be considered as "officially" EOL'd, but whenever resellers cannot order them anymore, it looks like they are.....

Update 2 : Misha, from MacMinute just told us that US dealers could still order the PowerMacs from Ingram, and that they have plenty....

Update 3 : Other European sites, such as MacPlus, are now confirming that the PowerMacs have the EOL status (at least in Europe...). Resellers can still order them from Ingram or Tech Data, which still have some in stock, but not from Apple.

Stay tune for more information

Sonnet producing 800 Mhz and 1 Ghz upgrades

Powerlogix isn't the only company selling 800 Mhz and Ghz G4 upgrades anymore. Sonnet seems to be on the verge of shipping 800 Mhz and 1 ghz upgrades as well. Those upgrades will work with AGP PowerMacs and PCI PowerMacs. We don't know for sure if they will work with a Cube
