The Cube GeForce2 has no fan!

Several of our readers report that their new Cube with a GeForce2 card has no fan. Contrary to the Radeon, the GeForce has no fan but is nearly fully covered with a large heatsink. The heatsink is approximatly 4" square. The only noticeable noise on this new version of the Cube is the hard drive.

Looking for some pictures.....

Oliver, one of our German readers tries to convince his PC office to switch to the Cube.....He needs some pictures of your desk with a Cube, in order to convince his boss.... Feel free to send us the pictures, we'll post them!

Here is what Oliver says :

"Hi guys, still being a Wintel-person (which is sooo mid 90s), I am looking for the switch after OS X becomes available, and the crucial apps along with it. I am looking at either the new Powerbook, or the Cube. Something quiet and beautiful. About the quiet: could you compare the quality of the GeForce vs the Radeon? I am bit concerned about the fan (read though on your page, that it is not very loud - but still...).

I was hoping to find some pictures of Cube owners desks in the Gallery section - do you have something coming up? Reason being to evaluate even "designy" uncluttered desks with all the Cube-equipment on - see how people treat them. ;-) Getting the whole picture. The Cube alone is cute, no doubt, but doesn't it lose much of its appeal sitting on a desk with all the peripheral connected to it?

Powerbook or Cube, that is the question...

Greetings from Germany,

Oliver"

The Cube death controversy

The G4 Cube team may have been disbanded, but the Cube will still be sold for a while. Several web sites are now claiming that the Cube is not dead at all. Check, for instance, Mac OS Rumors

Software : G-Sound

Griffin has created a utility called G-Sound. According to Griffin, "It is a free control panel that provides more accurate control over your Mac's sound input and output. The control panel has larger volume sliders and provides a numerical value for the computer's sound level. It is a great addition for people using their Macs with programs like iTunes and Sound Jam. The G-Sound control panel also does not produce a system beep when changing the Computer's system volume as this can be very overpowering when music is being played through powered speakers or stereos." You can download that utility from here.

Software : GeForce2 MX Driver Update

Apple has released the GeForce2 MX Driver Update. It installs new graphics card firmware and Mac OS 9 system extensions which improve performance and applications compatibility. The new firmware also fixes a compatibility problem between the older firmware and newer versions of the NVIDIA system extensions.

Cube team disbanded?

According to a MacUser article, the Cube design team has been disbanded. Does this mean the end of this product? We think that this is greatly exagerated. This is only a rumor. And even if it happened to be true, the Cube is already designed, isn't it? We don't think that Steve Jobs will kill his baby like that. The new Cubes seem to sell better.

Cubes with the Nividia GeForce2 MX card delayed?

One of our readers sent us a mail about his Cube order. It seems to have been delayed :

"Cubes from the Apple Store with the nVidia GeForce2 MX card are now delayed until mid-March. I placed my order immediately after Steve left the stage at MacWorld Tokyo. The original shipment delay was four days, then March 3 and now March 17! I hope this is the last one.

Regards,

Pete"

Here is the e-mail that Apple sent him :

" To Our Valued Apple Customer: Thank you for your recent order.

We are continuing to experience a greater backlog delay than originally anticipated on the Power Mac G4 Cube with an NVIDIA GeForce2 MX video card. Our goal is still to ship your order as soon as possible, and we expect to ship your order by March 17th. Please contact us within 10 days if you would like us to continue working to fill your order."

Does this mean that the demand is very high for the new Cubes or that NVidia does not have enough cards to sell to Apple?
