Digisette : Readers comments.

One of our readers, Aaron, sent us that e-mail about Digisette :

"You have an article about the Digisette MP3 player on your home page, but as near as I can tell, there's no way to use this device with a Mac yet. Should you be giving it publicity when there's no support, or is there some way to use it with a Mac that I'm not aware of?

Thanks,

Aaron"

It is not officially supported. However some of our readers have successfully used that MP3 player with iTunes. We did not test the Digisette Duo and cannot confirm this. If you have, please send us a mail.

Apple announces a 17" TFT and drops the price of the 15" and 22" screens : a new life for the Cube?

Apple has just announced a new 17-inch flat-panel Apple Studio Display with "razor-sharp text and graphics, workspace wide enough for your ideas to flourish" This new display sells for $999. The 15" TFT now sells for only $599 and the Cinema Display for $2499. This could be the beginning of a new life for the Cube. The low-end Cube sells at $1299. With the 15" TFT, you now have to pay only $1898 (possibly less if the resellers make bundles) to have a fully functional and well designed bundle. But the most important announcement is the 17" TFT. Now, the Cube has an advantage over the Titanium. Last week, we would have prefered to buy a Titanium instead of a Cube with a 15" TFT. Both nearly had the same price, but the Titanium is a laptop, which is supposed to be more expensive that desktops. The Cube could not compete. With the 17" TFT, the Cube has a true advantage : a bigger screen for a smaller price than the Titanium. Will it be the beginning of a new life for the Cube?

A new kind of MP3 player

There is a new kind of MP3 player on the market. The DUO Digital Player, from Digisette works as both a stand-alone MP3 and digital audiobook player, and a digital cassette you can play in your car or your regular walkman. This player has a rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride battery which allows you to play music for up to 6 hours. The player connects to your computer through USB.

Polls

The results of our last poll (What video card would you like to put in the Cube? ) are the following :
  • ATI 128 1.70%
  • Radeon 17.45%
  • GeForce 2MX 15.32%
  • GeForce 3 61.28%
  • What's a video card? 4.26%

Our readers are apparently Power Users. They want to buy computers with high-end graphic cards. Let's hope the next Cube will have an AGP 4x slot capable of handling a GeForce 3 card. The current high-end video cards (Radeon and GeForce 2MX) arrive in second position, with approximatly the same number of votes.

There is a new poll about the TFT screen you would like to buy in the near future. Click here to vote.

Review : Que Firewire CDRW

I recently sold my last SCSI Mac. I now only own USB and Firewire Macs. Instead of buying an expensive SCSI to Firewire adapter, I tought it was time to buy a Firewire drive. I wanted at least a 8x drive. Then I saw the Firewire Que Drive 12 x and 16 x. I did not know which one to choose. I tested them before buying one. Even if the 16x was speedier, I chose the 12 x, because it was really cheaper. And it burns discs very fast!

Poll : Which Mac will be you next computer?

To the question "Which Mac will be your next computer", you answered :

  • The Cube 27.40%
  • The new iBook 36.99%
  • The G4 Titanium 9.59%
  • The PowerMac G4 19.18%
  • The iMac 2.74%
  • A vintage Mac 1.37%
  • None, I'm switching to Wintel 2.74%

(Those polls are not scientific. They only reflect the opinion of the people who participated...)

It seems interesting that most of the people want to buy a Mac that does not take much space (ie : the iBook and the Cube) and is cheap ( yes the Cube is rather cheap....). We know that our readers are interested in buying a Cube and that the 27.4% who want to buy a Cube may not reflect the real market. However, what is interesting is that the number of people who want to buy an iMac is very low.

There is now a new poll about the video card you would like to put in your Cube. Vote here!

Harware : JukeBox 6000

Archos technology is selling an MP3 player with a 6 GB hard disk. You can connect this player to your USB port and store up to 150 CDs of music. There is no need to buy a second hard drive to store your MP3s. You can now store them directly on your MP3 player.
