Rumor : Sonnet preparing a Cube processor upgrade?

During MWNY, we asked a Sonnet Rep if they were going to create an accelerator card for the Cube. The answer was that it is likely that an upgrade will be made. They are currently evaluating if there is enough demand. Here, at the Cube-Zone, we believe there is. Enough Cubes have been sold by Apple for an upgrade to be economically viable.

Even if it is not "officially" planned for the moment, if the market decides it wants an upgrade, Sonnet will make one. According to the person we talked to, it is technically doable but it requires some testing because of the heat problems that can happen, since the Cube has no fan. The card would be nearly the same as the Sonnet Duet (the Cube uses the same processor connector). The person we talked to also said that his boss, who is a Cube owner, would like to have an upgrade too...When the boss wants it.... You know what you have to do to transform that project/rumor into a real product : write to Sonnet and tell them that you want a Cube upgrade!

Cubes (new or refurbished) still available in some places (part II)

Cubes are apparently sold out at the Apple Store. But some of our readers have found new places where you can buy Cubes:

  • Cubes are also available at Elite Computers in Cupertino, CA. When I was in the store yesterday they had at least 30 Cubes stacked on the sales floor. -- Jeff
  • Remarketingassociates.com - list an Apple refurbished auction coming up in August with G4, monitors etc. May have some cubes. Might have great prices. Chris
  • Some other people reported that Circuit City (in California) also has Cubes in limited quantities.

Rumor : a redesigned Cube coming next year?

One of our sources spoke to an Apple partner company at Macworld New York. Here is what he says : this particular partner company ( a hardware manufacturer) displaying a Cube (they own it, not for sale - I asked) had some inside information on why Apple pulled the Cube. He said it was because of heat problems with the higher speed CPUs. He also mentioned that Apple is "committed to the smallest possible footprint.". He also said that he knows that Apple is redesigning the Cube to counteract the particular problems that are known. He said we might see the Cube return within in the year.

If this happens to be true that would explain why Apple said that there is a small chance to introduce a new Cube in the near future. The chance is small because they do not know if they will be able to solve the heat problems created by the use of higher-speed processors. That would also explain why Apple never shipped Cubes with G4 at 733 Mhz....

Cubes (new or refurbished) still available in some places

Even if it is not produced by Apple, you can still find some Cubes (new or refurbished). For the moment, here is what we have found. If you know some places where Cubes are still available, please contact us.

  • Apple sells (again) refurbished Cube on the Apple Store for $1099.
  • One of the users of the Cube email list said yesterday that were also several new Cubes at a local CompUSA in Miami : "If one is looking for a Cube check out CompUSAs. Surprisingly I just found 6 Cubes at the Miami (Dadeland) store. All the $1599 CDRW model, brand new and with no discount."
  • For Canadian readers, MacDoc can find a Cube for you if you really want one.

What's inside the Quicksilver towers (photos and benchmarks)?

The new towers look great but what about inside? They really are a model of what computers should be. You can easily open them. Their bays are accessible. It is the same for the slots. On the pictures, you can see the AGP slot, the four PCI slots and the drive bays. The AGP slot is 4X slot. It comes preinstalled with the NVIDIA GeForce2 MX graphics card with 32MB of SDRAM on the 733MHz and 867MHz Power Mac G4 models and with the dual-display capable NVIDIA GeForce2 MX with TwinView and 64MB of SDRAM on the dual 800MHz Power Mac G4. The PCI slots are 64-bit 33MHz slots with enhanced performance capabilities (up to 215 megabytes per second throughput).

But what is really inside the new towers? According to Apple, they are really faster than a Pentium, even a 1.7 Ghz one. Apple also claims that the new towers can encode MPEG-2 faster than real-time (as shown in the picture below). But what can those tower do for those who really need power (ie : game users)?

We ran some benchmarks with Quake on OS 9 (sorry, no OSX for the moment....). And we can say that those towers are fast!!!!

The game was tested on a powermac G4 867mhz with 256 MB of RAM and a GeForce2MX, and OS 9.2 which is standard on those computers. This computer also had a Maxtor 40 Gb drive installed. Quake was on this drive (thanks to Ben for those tests...By the way, you are one of the lucky first owners of the new towers....).

Mac running in 32bit color and 32bit textures:

  • 640x480 98.5 fps
  • 800x600 86.6 fps
  • 1024x768 62.3 fps

Mac running in 32bit color and 32bit textures but with sound off :

  • 640x480 128.4 fps
  • 800x600 106.4 fps
  • 1024x768 71.6 fps
  • 1280x1024 57.4 fps

Quicksilver towers already overcloked : the Mac and the G4 finally break the 1 Ghz barrier!

Some crazy people have already overclocked their G4 towers. They are now running at 1Ghz. The Mac has finally reached and broken a new level of power....

Here are the speeds at which the new G4 towers can run :

CPU Clock Multiplier
733MHz x5.5
800MHz x6
867MHz x6.5
933MHz x7
1000MHz x7.5
1067MHz x7.5 (different resistor settings)

If you want to know how to do it, check this japanese site. Doing it will void your warranty.....
